On February 7th, the annual Math is Cool competition took place at Liberty High school for middle schoolers. This competition is important for FWPA, as it is one of the three annual competitions our math team competes in.
The math team spends most of the year practicing for the competition which tests one’s algebra, geometry, mental math, and team work skills. Out of these skills, many students, like Douglass Kee, find geometry to be particularly challenging while mental math to be on the easier side. As Douglass explains, “My strongest skill is mental math, and I’m trying to work on geometry.”
Although these competitions can be difficult, members of the FWPA math team look forward to them, because of how challenging, competitive, and engaging these events can be. Landon Truong shares this enthusiasm, saying, “I think the challenge of having to solve against others always keeps me engaged.”
After the majority of the competition is over, the final event is the award ceremony. Although the math tests are now finished, this part of the competition can be the most stressful as students anxiously await their results. Though this competition will be tough, Krishna Garg has confidence in his ability to do well as he states, “Definitely top 10 for sure, because even though it will be tough I still want to place top 10, optimistically top 5.”
Regardless of the final result of the competition, this Math is Cool event allowed for the math team students to challenge themselves, grow their skills, and gain valuable experience to help them for future competitions.
