During the days building up to the dance, a boy named John tried to buy his dance ticket. Just like the previous years, he got in line on Thursday with his $7 and tried to buy a ticket. But this time he was rejected, finding out that the early day discount was now removed.
This change was brought to this year’s dance by vote from our ASB council. This was because ASB advisors Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Camp reviewed the profits from the dance, and compared it to the rising cost of prices with food and supplies due to inflation. As Mr. Anderson stated, “We looked at the rising cost for the items for the dance and it was an ASB decision.”
This change also was a surprise for most ASB members before the meeting, as stated by Milana Polivoda, “Yeah I think when they first mentioned it I was a little surprised but then I figured out that it was more beneficial.” But they were quick to see the positive side in this change as Milana stated, “I think that because of inflation it is really beneficial for our school because obviously it’s better to have more money so it’s really not that surprising that we would make our tickets more expensive.”
Although this change was made to fight the cost of inflation hitting FWPA, it may fall flat if viewed in a different lens by the eyes of the students. After all, some like Justin Neillie view this change as unnecessary, Justin later stated, “It’s a scam, who is paying $10 for food?”
Although some students may dislike this new change, others can resonate with the benefits the school gets for this sacrifice such as what Bareera Rai said, “I was a bit shocked but I didn’t think people would have a big reaction as it’s only 3 dollars.”
Overall, this was a sudden change from the years prior, and mixed opinions grew throughout students. However, the dance brought in record numbers this year as reported by Mr. Anderson, “We had more people at this dance than ever before, 151 bought tickets and we probably had another 40 students who didn’t buy tickets so this was a record dance for us.”
