Even though Mr. Roberts has been teaching musical theater for one year, the concept itself has been around since ancient Greece. Just like today, this concept combined music and art to produce plays that honored the Greek gods. Over time, musical theater plays evolved to have many themes, and there is a theme/story around every play in the musical theater elective. As well as producing a play each semester, Mr. Robert’s class focuses on the history of musical theater, and how it evolved to modern times.
Like any play, there’s a lot of work that goes behind the scenes, such as the Carol. Mr. Robert’s musical theater class put it together, rehearsing lines and performing it at the end of the semester. It is a hands-on-experience, as Mr. Roberts revealed, “They(the students) wrote The Carol.”
Students chose that class for many reasons. Some of his students were curious, with Harper Sorenson stating, “I hope to learn more about how it works.”
Others, like Alex Gasanov, wanted a more hands-on role, saying, “I hope I get to do the play.”
Regardless of why students chose to take the class, they are now looking for ideas concerning next semester. Mr. Roberts says, “If students show more of a drive to be independent, then I would have them write their own plays & possibly do one of them.”
Most students also anticipate a second play, with Constance Ypersiel revealing, “He said we’re gonna write a script on our own, choose one, and do that play.”
With all of the speculation flowing around in class, it is suspected that a second play is most likely in the works. What it’s about has yet to be revealed.
