A trend that many students seem to enjoy and many staff members dread at FWPA is 6-7. The trend took root on social media and was featured in the song “Doot Doot” by Skrilla in early 2025. Despite the fact that 6-7 has no actual meaning, it has become an inside joke among Generation Z and younger.
Even in the modern day of social media and technology, people still have offline interactions with online trends. Sofia Corbett, for instance, recalled her first experience with 6-7 at school, stating that she “heard Chase scream about it in advisory.”
People are also naturally curious about a widely shared trend and want to know about it, leading to Leah Mintesnot’s initial perspective on the trend being, “I was curious.”
As the trend took hold, schools across the nation started to crack down on the 6-7 phrase, citing distraction as their biggest concern. People also tend to get annoyed as the phrase is used, as the person who says it draws attention to themselves rather than the bigger picture being presented. Leah’s opinion as others have changed, she now complains “Yes, it’s annoying.” Sofia Corbett has always found 6-7 annoying, as she grumbles “I get more & more annoyed every time I hear it.” A few people, like Mr. Roberts, took a different approach, saying that his general perspective has been “eh, it’s fine.” Ms. Kelly is known for embracing it, remarking that it is “easier than fighting it.”
Looking ahead, 6-7 will inevitably die out and another trend will most likely replace it. In that period, one might do some self reflection on this trend when they grow older. Marianne Zimoglyad thinks, “It’s going to blow up again only when people turn 67.” Ms. Kelly joked about the next trend, remarking “Guess what comes after 67? 68.” Sofia simply just wants it to be gone, commenting on the eventual passing of 6-7 as “Good riddance.”
As short-lived as they are, trends spread. People inevitably form opinions about trends, and respond differently to scenarios of the trend being recognized or celebrated.
And 6-7 is no exception.
