The new compost bins and lunch trays have been a welcome addition to FWPA. These changes to our lunch and break time are part of a new initiative to reduce both our waste and ecological footprint. “I believe it was a citywide push for the lunch trays to get less garbage being thrown away each week, getting more compostable materials that can spare landfill space, as well as getting more materials recycled,” said Mr. Anderson.
This change comes with students’ opinions about the trays and the new composting bins, as they now have to ensure that they put their lunch trays back into the metal carts for them to be gathered and cleaned for reuse the next day. “I like those a lot. I like how I don’t have to throw those away every time now,” said Wulfric Waldrip.
Along with this, students are also encouraged to dispose of their food scraps in the new green compost bins to help reduce waste. “I think they’re really cool because then it gets people thinking about what they put into the garbage,” said Aiden Hon.
These changes are something that FWPA will learn from and hopefully make our own for the better of our school community to make our school more enjoyable and clean for everyone. “We’re just starting to get conditioned to knowing that we’d be mindful of where the different things that we have for lunch are going. Trays have been going a lot better than I anticipated. We’ve been pretty good, at least, at making less work for ourselves, of having to sort out the composting bins because there’s trash in there,” said Mr. Genzlinger.
