Whether it’s a traditional dish, a yummy snack, or a cozy drink, FWPA students recommend a wide variety of their favorite sweet and savory foods, exclusive to this time of year.
Special meals or recipes can remind us of cherished memories and help us relieve our favorite moments in our lives from years ago, especially during this season. FWPA students enjoy lots of different foods and drinks that they associate with the holidays, some family traditions, others winter comfort foods.
As Thanksgiving has come and gone, DJ Smith is still grieving. Like many others, he emphasized that he’ll be missing Thanksgiving. He explained his favorite dish “is probably mashed potatoes,” which is a holiday staple at his house!
Meanwhile, Sofia Corbett is excited to start making her first batch of gingerbread for the holiday season. One of the main reasons that it became a popular baked good was because of the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. These days, it’s a staple in many households during the holidays, including Sofia’s. She explains that she loves their flavors, and adds, “I really like baking it!” This is the primary reason for her affinity towards this treat.
Others are looking forward to Christmas, where they celebrate their unique traditions. Dannia Rogel Rojas recalls that her family “has tamales on Christmas Eve every year.” But she’s not the only one with a Christmas tradition! Mr. Roberts has a jolly Christmas, as every Christmas morning, his dad makes cardamom rolls. He explains, “They’re like cinnamon rolls but with a little orange zest… so good!” Then every year like clockwork, “We open our gifts, eat the cardamom rolls and pass out.” Jacob Verbeurgt also looks forward to Christmas, emphasizing, “I love a Christmas roast!” which is the highlight of his Christmas dinner.
The holiday season highlights the fact that food brings people together, which makes the holiday season even more magical.
