Here at FWPA, we don’t have organized sports teams for students to play, so the students are allowed to play any sport they like for their home school. There are also different seasons for playing sports. For example, there are some students that are playing basketball, swimming, and wrestling during the winter. Eli Herbert swims and Rita Mucheru wrestles, both for Decatur High School. Daniel Mak swims and Justin Vasylevychn wrestles for Todd Beamer High School. Jerome Williams plays basketball for the Sacajawea Middle School and Ethan Wolf plays basketball for the Illahee Middle School. Micheal Gasanov swims for Thomas Jefferson High School. Alexander Chernikov and Kaicen Carter play basketball for the Federal Way High School. Isabella Lemeshev plays gymnastics for Kilo Middle School. Actions Speak Louder! Kaicen Carter, 9th grader, shared where he plays basketball, and how long he’s been playing. Kaicen Carter plays basketball for Federal Way High School’s varsity team. He has played basketball since he was five years old, but didn’t get to play much because he needed to practice so much before joining a team. He thinks playing basketball is very enjoyable because he always plays with his brothers. “Someone who I look up to is Brad James who is my favorite basketball player because he is a very good person and very similar to me.” Kaicen shared. Hoop dreams! Jerome Williams is a 6th grader in FWPA who plays basketball for Sacajawea Middle School. He was 7 years old when he started playing basketball because his dad likes to play basketball and is very good at it. One of his favorite basketball players is Anthony Edwards because he likes the way he plays and what he has done in life. “I think playing basketball has harms and benefits because you can get injured but you can also get a scholarship and learn new skills. There is one point where I feel that it’s challenging me, when I miss this shot but it’s also good because I get to compete with others in the team which I am really good at,” Jerome described. Catch the Current, Ride the Success! Eli Herbert, 10th grader, talked about the sport he does and what school he does it for. He has been swimming since he was 3 years old because he was very good at it. He swims for Decatur High School. He thinks that swimming has many benefits and challenges like, facing a lot of mental challenges than the physical but, the good thing is that it is a very good cardio. “Something that I really like about swimming is that I get to be with my friends and someone who I look up to is Michael Phelps because he is a good swimmer and a very good person,” Eli shared. No Pain No Gain! Rita Mucheru is a 10th grader who does wrestling for Decatur High School. Rita started wrestling at the age of 14 and she likes it because she thinks that wrestling can build her up, be a very good exercise for her and allow her to make more connections with people in her team. She shared about pros and cons of wrestling. “The pros are that it gives you strength physically and mentally, but the cons are that it challenges you in different ways like when you lose a game and it teaches you how to learn from your own mistakes.” |
