Many students find school dances enjoyable, but have you ever thought of the effort that goes into planning them behind the scenes? The Disney Dance, which was the first dance of the school year, allowed attendees to dress as their favorite Disney characters. Over 100 students attended, and students owe a big thank you to our ASB members and volunteers, who dedicate their time to ensuring that every event is enjoyable for everyone. One of those ASB members is Hannah Gorrie.
So many factors played into planning this dance. To roll back the tape, let’s look at what actually goes on when everything is still being put together.
According to Hannah, an important element in planning is the people who dedicated their time to the ASB work days. The effort put in by representatives and volunteers made a big difference in the process. Hannah went on to say, “I’m really glad this year’s ASB members are working hard and I see a bright future in the executives.”
The theme of this year’s dance, as stated before, was Disney. The executives brainstormed possible themes for the dance and then the rest of the members in ASB took a vote.
Hannah says that the planning was time-consuming during the week. She says that during other times when they were planning dances, people would hang out and then get focused when the day of the dance was near. But, from her perspective, that didn’t happen for this dance; everyone stayed focused the whole time.
Along with the ASB and volunteers, Ms. Camp worked behind the scenes with everyone. Hannah says that Mrs. Camp helped everybody with their needs. Some volunteers stayed after school to help even though they weren’t in ASB.
Sometimes, when things don’t turn out the way we expect, they might turn out better. For Hannah, she thought the soundboard poster wouldn’t turn out well, but it turned out to be a great attribute of the dance.
After the event, everything was worth it for Hannah. What made this dance worthwhile for the ASB members was being able to get everything done on time. When students are involved in the planning process, certain aspects of the dance can be significant. For Hannah, that was the fairy lights in the food court. As Hannah explained that the lights were tangled and it was very difficult for everyone to untangle them. When the attendees saw it, they probably thought it was a cute decoration but all the helpers knew “all the blood, sweat, and tears” that were put into untangling it.
Of course, just like any project, there’s always room for improvement. Publicity is one thing that Hannah said that the ASB is trying to work on. She says that sometimes people have to miss out on work days, which means that other people need to take care of extra things that weren’t finished.
“I am very pleased with what ASB accomplished this year and I’m hopeful that we can do even better next time,” says Hannah.
