Summer jobs are ways for students to learn new skills, make money, and gain experience for their future. Many young students get jobs like working for a family business, working at a store or restaurant, mowing lawns, babysitting, etc. These jobs teach teens useful skills like responsibility, time management, and can also help them decide what they want to do in the future.
There are different students doing different summer jobs at FWPA like Itzel Zotea, who is planning to work at Chick-Fil-A. “I’m looking forward to getting a job at Chick-Fil-A because I will get paid and learn responsibility, this is my first job which makes me really excited,” Itzel explained. Itzel also shared that she thought it would be really fun because her friends are working there as well.
Some students work at other jobs like family businesses. For example, Jewell Bowman, is looking forward to working with her family at a smoothie trailer. “I’m working tomorrow and I’m looking forward to it,” she exclaimed. “It gives me something to do and I can buy things I want before school starts.” Jewell got this job from her uncle because she wanted to be an entrepreneur.
Another student that plans on working at a job similar to Jewell is Esther Song, who plans on being a barista. “I’m looking forward to getting a job as a barista because it is my first job and I am gonna make a lot of money,” Esther explained. Esther thinks that being a barista would be a good job because she could learn lots of things from it, “From this job I think I can learn social skills from meeting new people and I can also learn to make drinks.”
Diana Biletska is planning to get a job a little different than others. “I’m looking for a beginner’s job during the summer that will help me gain community service and communication skills, and to get paid well,” said Diana “I’m looking for a beginner job to get experience so it isn’t too stressful,” Diana shared. She says that she wants to be able to interact with people better and be around people. “I’m looking forward to a job that can help me communicate with people better.”
Anthony Ramos is a younger student who mows lawns and enjoys learning new skills. “I enjoy my job because I get to learn things like keeping in contact with people,” he described. Anthony also enjoys his job because he can make money. “I wasn’t able to get a job when I was younger so it’s nice being able to get a job now,” Anthony stated.
Although most students enjoy their plans for their summer jobs, some don’t. Gabrielle Griffin is a student getting a job as a camp counselor in training. “I’m not really looking forward to being a camp counselor in training and working with a lot of kids,” she said sadly. Gabrielle does think she can learn things though, especially because her first job was babysitting so she worked with kids before. “I think I can learn to be independent from this job, I think I can learn to be a leader role as well since I’m working with kids and I have before.”
Based on the feedback from your peers, summer jobs are exciting and include nice experiences, all while helping younger teens have access to income. These summer jobs teach teens useful skills like responsibility, time management, and can also help them decide what they want to do in the future.
