The screen fades to black, and the conversations begin. Popcorn is gone, drinks are thrown away—and now, three FWPAians, fans of film, share their thoughts on what makes movies great.
During the day or late at night, you can watch movies whenever you want and obtain a sense of entertainment—but sometimes fright. Our perspective of the world can be shaped by the impactful influence of films. Have you ever experienced a movie that has changed your perspective of life?
Films serve a purpose that goes above entertainment—they create passions and influence lifestyles. In this article, three movie fans reveal their opinions on films, exposing the stories and experiences that keep them hooked. Their insights revealed unique perspectives.
Entertainment can be brought by watching movies, but what makes them so enjoyable? Some love storytelling and hidden details, while others focus on fun characters and strong acting. Jose Fernandez states, “I enjoy movies for the way they’re structured, and the storylines. A great film has funny, goofy characters and a well-written script.” Similarly, Robel Wondimagegn, mentioned something else—”I really enjoy the plot and storytelling of movies, and how they bring sequences of feelings in one scene. And, eating food is way more enjoyable while watching movies because you’ll eat it slowly since you’d want to also watch the movie—which’d give you a better eating experience.” Though both highlight the importance of plots for entertainment, Robel emphasizes how movies make simple activities, like eating, more enjoyable.
Now, hopping onto a staff’s opinion on this topic, Mr. Roberts claimed, “One of the things I like about film is the ability to explore storylines and stories that might not work as well on paper, which is the same reason I like graphic novels vs. books because there’s some things that work well with graphic novels that work as well with books, some things that works well with movies but not as well with books, some things that work as books that don’t work as well with anything else.” His view describes how movies give a storytelling experience, which brings narratives to life in ways that other formats can’t. Each perspective from these three people reveal the different reasons why films captivate audiences.
Looking for something to watch? The three movie fans shared their favorites—some well-known, others underrated—that might be worth a try. Jose Fernandez expresses, “My favorite movie is ‘A Silent Voice’, and an underrated movie I think deserves more attention is ‘Mirrored Mind.’” Robel Wondimagegn noted, “My favorite movie is ‘The Maze Runner’ because I like the mystery and high-stakes action added to the movie. But, an underrated film I think deserves more attention is ‘The Hate U Give’ because I like how the protagonist stands up for herself against police brutality.” Mr. Roberts shares a different favorite: “I think a film I will always say ‘yes, let’s watch it’, is Princess Bride because that film just has so much iconic dialogue and iconic humor to it, and it’s a movie that I never once walked away from saying ‘that was a waste of an hour.’”
To conclude, movies not only provide enjoyment to people, but also help sprout connections between them. Whether it’s through storytelling, personal favorites, or themes that pop out, they all shape perspectives and open up the chance to converse with others.
