Camp has always been the staple of events at FWPA, every year students prepare to get on a bus and drive to a campsite. Most go for the experience with friends, and others go for the views, but they all go for the journey.
This year’s 10th grade class went to camp last year and are going to this year’s camp, and most have also been in 7th grade. Since this is the last camp experience they will have at FWPA, they have a couple of thoughts. Rita Mucheru, a 10th grader, explained, “I feel kinda sad but that’s why I am going so I can relive the moment again.” Keanu Garcia, another 10th grader, also explained, “It’s kind of sad but not really sad because I will see them the next school day but it’s my last camp experience.”
The 10th grade class went to the first 7th grade camp after the 2020 COVID19 lockdown. Race Beebe, a 10th grader who was on that camp trip, had some memories to share about some of the activities he did during the expedition. “Running around the complex with friends, and using a wheelbarrow to ride around, we definitely weren’t meant to but it was fun in the moment.” expressed Race. Others in the same group remembered other events during that trip, such as Rita who mentioned, “The time when the bus tipped over on the side of the road into a ditch when a driver was on the opposite side of the road.”
Sixth grade is also going to camp this year, for most of the 6th grade students this is one of their first experiences going to a school camp. “I feel pretty excited to go but I have never been that far from home,” 6th grader Marco Hernadez noted. The 6th grade camp as a whole is a pretty new addition to FWPA, just beginning last year. The class goes to camp Burton, on Vashon Island, which requires a 30-minute ferry ride to get there. Most of the scholars are excited for things such as archery, but others are excited for other reasons. “I am excited, I have new friends this year and I am happy to be with them and experience it with them,” exclaimed Zoey Poplaski.
Camp is a large part of FWPA, it has been in the highest ranked events at FWPA for years now. Even though we lost the ability to take grades such as 7th, and 9th, the reign of camp thrives on.
